It can become a fixation, taking away from proper sleeping and eating. It can prevent healthy socialization and face-to-face interaction with family and peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-info\">&nbsp;It is important to note that not all screen time is equal. Especially with the COVID 19 pandemic, it is important to not feel bad about the amount of tech time children are getting. It is less about quantity and more about quality. The main goal is trying to determine if the screen time is productive vs. unproductive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-386e4fadf5413944f3d7c3830dbb8aeb\" style=\"color:#6d35a1;text-transform:capitalize\"><strong>Encourage parents to reflect on whether the majority of their children&#8217;s screen time is being used for:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u00a0Technology is being used for a variety of purpose<\/strong>s,\u00a0such as educational games; physical activity; social connection; and creative pursuits such as recording a song.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>that&nbsp;<strong>some of it occurs with other members of the househol<\/strong>d, e.g., a family movie night or video game challenge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>that the\u00a0<strong>content is safe and age-appropriat<\/strong>e.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Common Sense Media<\/a>\u00a0is a great resource for parents to make informed choices for their kids, with age-based ratings and reviews of movies, TV shows, books, apps, etc.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a0Here are a couple of their recent articles on how kids can connect online:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/lists\/safe-chat-rooms-and-social-sites-for-kids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Safe Chat Rooms and Social Sites for Kids<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/blog\/16-apps-and-websites-kids-are-heading-to-after-facebook\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">18 Social Media Apps and Sites Kids Are Using Right Now<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonsensemedia.org\/blog\/online-playdates-game-nights-and-other-ways-to-socialize-at-a-distance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Online Playdates, Game Nights, and Other Ways to Socialize at a Distance<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>that it is&nbsp;<strong>balanced&nbsp;over the course of each day<\/strong>, e.g., no screens at dinner time; dedicated time for reading a book; and getting outside.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-warning\">Screen time, especially social media use can become very compelling, but over time it may not make our clients feel better. Too much time on solo games or mindless scrolling can actually make us feel more alone. <strong>Try and communicate to both your clients and your parents that<\/strong>:<br><br>\u25a0 The peers they are connecting with or follow make him or her feel good (e.g., common interests).<br>\u25a0 Have them notice their feelings using different social media platforms.<br>\u25a0 Have clients recognize what they are missing in their day due to he amount of screen time use (e.g., exercise; family time; contributing to household chores)?<br>\u25a0 Discuss whether your client is posting,\u00a0messaging, playing games, video-chatting, OR are they mindlessly scrolling?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c76463a851432dfe06dce27000f3879b\" style=\"color:#6d35a1\"><strong>Different strategies to support healthy screen time:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Modelling healthy behaviour is key. Establish technology-free zones in the house and technology-free hours where no one uses technology.&nbsp;And, it can be helpful for adults to acknowledge that it is difficult!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set-up specific screen-time settings on phones\/tablets that limits app use, or those that allow you to control wifi to specific devices (like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shaw.ca\/tv\/bluecurve-tv-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shaw\u2019s Blue Curve<\/a>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have your client set a reasonable goal around the amount of time they want to spend on social media.&nbsp;They can then monitor this themselves with a screen-time tracker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some children\/adolescents struggle to stay connected with others and they need a nudge to take a chance on connecting with others.\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Dedicate specific times during the day for reaching out to friends, classmates, or relatives online, and have them enter these times into their daily schedule.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Keep phones and tablets out of bedrooms at night for undisrupted sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have ready-made messages for friends\/peers when busy and\/or needing to set boundaries, e.g. \u201c<em>Sorry, it is dinner time and I can\u2019t talk right now, I will message you later tonight.<\/em>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continue to encourage an&nbsp;open dialogue&nbsp;with them around what online platforms they are using<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-82d5d863edaccb3de0a16ad750119398\" style=\"color:#6d35a1;text-transform:capitalize\"><strong>Additional Resources&nbsp;to&nbsp;support screen time&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucalgary.ca\/news\/coronavirus-5-tips-navigating-childrens-screen-time-during-social-distancing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Calgary<\/a> &#8211; Five tips for navigating screen time during social distancing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foothillsacademy.org\/community-services\/parent-education\/parent-articles\/screen-use-and-adhd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foothills<\/a> &#8211; The appeal of screen use and ADHD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foothillsatredoak.com\/teen-recovery-blog\/how-to-limit-screen-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foothills at Red Oak Recovery<\/a> &#8211; How to limit screen time for children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For more information and targeted interventions on screen time, see this handout: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/files\/2020\/09\/Computer-and-Electronic-Devices-Handout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Computer and Electronic Devices Handout<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nScreen time can be problematic for a variety of reasons.
