{"id":1368,"date":"2020-08-25T10:16:59","date_gmt":"2020-08-25T10:16:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=1368"},"modified":"2024-03-07T23:40:56","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T23:40:56","slug":"adhd-specific-study-strategies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=1368","title":{"rendered":"ADHD Specific Classroom Strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-eedc17595c78769324b5a012034d6a0c\" style=\"color:#c54a4a\"><br><strong>ADHD Study Strategies <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In addition to general study strategies, the following study strategies are recommended to clients with ADHD:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A reduced course load is recommended, to lessen the chance of feeling overwhelmed by the amount of work, and to increase the chance of a successful outcome for courses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your client may benefit from content tutoring in subjects in which he\/she is feeling lost, or in which he\/she is failing to complete assignments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It may be beneficial to \u201c<strong>contrac<\/strong>t\u201d with your client once specific goals and steps have been identified in achieving goals in designated courses. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, a contract could be drawn up to include attendance expectations (all classes unless permission granted), completion of a reasonable percentage of assigned work (<em>e.g. 75%<\/em>), attendance of regular meetings with a guidance counselor (e.g. <em>weekly<\/em>) to address time management, review whether your client is on track in long-term projects or if assignments have been handed in, and to address other issues as they arise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Self-advocacy skills may require practice, and your client may benefit from support in requesting available accommodations or time extensions as they appear necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is recommended that your client embark on some learning (e.g. through reading or video format), regarding the impact of AD\/HD challenges in daily life, and strategies that may assist in personal and academic goal attainment.&nbsp; It will be important to develop a good understanding of what medication can and cannot do.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-4fd19b07079015cf0e050676f6775e96\" style=\"color:#c54a4a\"><strong>Distraction Minimization Strategies <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In order to help minimize his\/her tendency to be distracted, your client may benefit from the following strategies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using earplugs during activities involving reading and writing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Arranging their work environment so as to reduce the impact of noise or other distractions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using frequent but timed breaks during activities that require sustained attention<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-0af67d6491e8ec1008420fd2c92968b1\" style=\"color:#c54a4a\"><strong>Strategies to Assist in Reaching Academic Goals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The following study strategies are provided in order to assist your client in reaching academic goals:<br><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Obtain course outlines and reading material lists in advance.&nbsp; Try to read course material pertaining to the lecture ahead of time, using course outlines\/schedules as a guide, or consulting with instructors to determine relevant reading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask the instructors to provide you with outlines of lectures early to aid with the organization of your notes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cue sheets that list new and critical terms should be constructed prior to the lectures.&nbsp; This may be done while previewing relevant chapters prior to the lecture, or by asking the instructor to provide you with a list of important terms.&nbsp; It is important to include definitions on the cue sheets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>After completing reading in preparation for a lecture, jot down ideas, concepts or points of view you do not understand. Listen carefully during the lecture to see if these issues are addressed.&nbsp; If your understanding does not improve during the lecture, ask questions during the lecture time or request a meeting with the instructor to address your concerns at a later time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Determine if there are other students in your class who would be willing to form note-taking or study groups.&nbsp; Discussing main ideas and supporting details or examples with other students will enhance the understanding of course material.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Read assignment directions and test questions carefully before starting, and seek clarification when necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use an agenda to set daily goals, record due dates, develop artificial due dates for long assignments, and break required reading into parts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-71fb94c10cd9295536593bd808742e52\" style=\"color:#c54a4a\"><strong>Attentional-Related Concern Strategies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The following strategies may assist your client in dealing with his attention-related concerns:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Setting a specific time and place to complete homework.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completing homework in short blocks of time with frequent breaks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Setting daily goals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Breaking homework in small pieces and entering these in an agenda.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building in rewards for completing work or finishing tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reviewing previous lecture notes and reading required chapters prior to lectures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using pre-reading strategies such as reading heading and key vocabulary words prior to reading and thinking of what you already know about the topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remaining active while reading by summarizing after each section, taking notes in margins or on paper, or highlighting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Using post-reading strategies such as answering chapter-end questions, reviewing to highlight important points and summarizing what has been read.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-c5abe0242bc20725ffd6cd4d2c682043\" style=\"color:#c54a4a\"><strong>Additional<\/strong> <strong>Helpful Strategies and Information<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The benefits of exercise on attention, mental alertness and productivity have long been documented. These benefits are especially noteworthy in the case of persons with attention challenges.\u00a0 Your client is encouraged to seek out ways of staying active in ways that they personally enjoy.\u00a0\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li> Planning regular periods of physical activity several times per week can be very helpful in promoting the natural release of chemicals in the brain to improve concentration and focus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Individuals who experience attention difficulties often find it difficult to shift from high-stimulation activities such as television or computer games.\u00a0 These activities are best reserved for times in the day when other commitments have been met. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Given their tendency to engage the participant in lengthy periods of sedentary activity, setting personal limits is recommended, such as scheduling specific times to stop.\u00a0 <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is also recommended that computer games be avoided during the hour or so prior to sleep, when more relaxing activities and routines are suggested.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your client will likely benefit from preferential seating, and smaller groups for learning and instruction whenever possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some students benefit from wearing headphones when working to block out noise and auditory distractions.&nbsp; Again, it will be important to ensure that the student does not feel singled out.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cue cards with symbols for look and listen can be placed on a student\u2019s desk.&nbsp; A teacher can point to them whenever attention wanders excessively.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instructions should be preceded by calling your client\u2019s name to ensure that he\/she is attending; eye contact should be actively ensured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage your client to give himself\/herself subvocal cues to pay attention (under his\/her breath), such as \u201cI have to listen now.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When presenting instructions to your client, avoid background noise.&nbsp; Speak with pauses between statements to facilitate processing of information and to improve understanding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Short, step-by-step verbal instructions should be presented, along with visual aids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To improve his\/her recall of oral instructions, make your client rehearse instructions mentally or subvocally before acting on them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To help himself\/herself stay on task, your client can also verbalize the steps subvocally while following them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teach students to check their work for careless errors once they are finished.\u00a0 \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Key things should include<\/strong>:\u00a0 function signs in math;
