They may be feeling anxious or dwell on negative events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f1acf9eb96a41966e1724913c57291f0\" style=\"color:#2d7eae\"><strong>Some strategies for negative thinking include:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage your client to challenge negative thinking with positive thinking. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If\u00a0your client engages in negative self-talk, assist them\u00a0in reframing these statements to more positive statements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For example, if your client \u00a0says, \u201c<em>I can\u2019t do it,<\/em>\u201d focus on what they have been able to do and help her identify what they need to do to complete the task or solve a problem.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Positive self-talk is another strategy that may be helpful. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Positive self-talk (<em>constructive messages<\/em>) can help students feel more confident about their abilities and change their perspectives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Teach <em>Student<\/em> to use positive self-talk when confronted with frustrations (e.g., \u201cT<em>his might be hard, but I can do it!<\/em>). <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Model positive self-talk and encourage the use of self-talk to promote a positive emotional response and challenge negative thinking.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give your client lots of encouragement and positive praise, and help her\/him focus on the positives in their day (e.g., what went well for her, what she was able to do successfully)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your client could use the following questions to help them through negative thinking. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Through answering the questions they may come to a more realistic picture of what is making them anxious:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Am I falling into a thinking trap <\/em>(e.g., catastrophizing or overestimating danger)? What is the evidence that this thought is true? What is the evidence that this\u00a0 thought is not true?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Have I confused a thought with a fact?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What would I tell a friend if they had the same thought?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What would a friend say about my thought?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Am I 100% sure that ___________will happen?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>How many times has __________happened before?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is __________so important that my future depends on it?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>What is the worst that could happen?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>If it did happen, what can I do to cope with or handle it?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Is my judgment based on the way I feel instead of facts?<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>Am I confusing \u201cpossibility\u201d with \u201ccertainty\u201d?
