{"id":385,"date":"2020-07-20T21:58:21","date_gmt":"2020-07-20T21:58:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=385"},"modified":"2024-03-15T01:22:55","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T01:22:55","slug":"general-reading-strategies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=385","title":{"rendered":"General Reading Strategies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-medium-font-size wp-elements-ab1a8bbdafddf02e9b81abac654823a2\" style=\"color:#e64b72;text-transform:capitalize\"><strong>General Reading Strategies your client may find helpful:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure your client&#8217;s presented instructional material is at their  academic level and continue to work on developing their rudimentary reading skills (e.g., phonological awareness, decoding, word recognition, reading fluency). \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As\u00a0the client gets older, difficulties mastering these key academic skills may interfere with their learning in other areas.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continue to work on the client&#8217;s&nbsp;understanding of phoneme-grapheme correspondence (i.e., sound-letter correspondences).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reading material that includes many sight words may help increase automaticity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teaching high-frequency words and spelling-based decoding strategies may also be helpful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Model fluent reading. Teach the client to self-identify reading errors and provide them with corrective feedback.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It may be helpful to have your client read along with books\/text on a computer using a \u201cread\u201d program such as text-to-speech programs or software.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Every effort should be made to keep the reading process as enjoyable as possible for your client. It is paramount to keep reading fun and maintain a student\u2019s motivational interest. The client should be encouraged to read books that she\/he find engaging and are of interest to her.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your client may benefit from assisted reading and practicing words in isolation to improve her\/his reading. \n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In assisted reading, the student reads aloud while a helping reader (e.g., adult) follows along silently.
