{"id":768,"date":"2020-07-31T18:47:39","date_gmt":"2020-07-31T18:47:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=768"},"modified":"2024-03-13T21:01:49","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T21:01:49","slug":"helping-clients-control-impulses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=768","title":{"rendered":"Strategies to Support Impulse Control"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-success\">To support your clients impulse control (i.e., the ability to stop and think before acting) you may want to suggest the following recommendations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide your client with extra structure in the form of general guidelines and specific rules to teach acceptable behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Offer additional supports such as visual cues or verbal prompts to bolster the &#8220;<em>stop&#8221;<\/em> function in their behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Encourage those around your client to plan in advance for potentially problematic times by identifying what triggers your client&#8217;s loss of control and providing extra supports in those situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Teach the client alternatives to negative behaviors. For older children, work with them to brainstorm more positive responses to triggering situations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use rewards to motivate desired behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensure your client&#8217;s safety.
