General Writing Supports (page 2)
Some general strategies may include (part 2):
- When working on completing written assignments such as essays, papers, and longer homework assignments, they should work with a tutor who could assist with and teach revision and editing skills.
- The use of checklists and proof-reading standards would be helpful in this regard, particularly with identifying and correcting common errors.
- Graphic organizers can be used to help your client brainstorm and plan what he is going to write: https://www.understood.org/en/school-learning/learning-at-home/encouraging-reading-writing/download-graphic-organizers-to-help-grade-schoolers-with-writing
- Encourage your client to follow the steps in this document when producing a written assignment: Steps to Produce Written Work
- Encourage the student to speech 20 to 30 minutes a day engaged in writing; it can be as informal as writing a grocery list, a list of fun things to do on vacation, a letter to a friend or a relative, a poem, or personal thoughts in a journal, or the beginning of an assignment.
- Support the client in the maintenance of their mental energy for writing. Allow them to take frequent breaks when while writing. Suggest that they get up and walk around during these breaks.
- Encourage the teacher and client to have frequent “conferences” to evaluate their progress and set new writing goals.
