Encourage your client to note anything they don’t understand.

In Class:

If your client frequently has trouble following the verbal explanation while copying from the board, recommend they use a tape recorder or another student’s notes. Then your client can focus your attention on following the instruction.

Note especially what the instructor says as the problem is worked out, not just the numbers and examples (if you get lost, note where this happened so you can check with the instructor later).

Because math concepts build from the previous steps, if your client misses a class or misunderstand something, suggest they catch up or clear up any confusion immediately.

After Class:

Encourage your client to over his/her notes as soon after class as possible. Fill in/write extra notes if necessary (e.g., “you do this step because…”). Suggest your client re-work all sample problems presented in class while the steps are fresh in their mind.

Have your client write the concept or operation in their own words (explain it to yourself). This is especially important when learning formula.

Your client can ask themselves: “Do I understand what the formula means?… When to use it? Why it works?”

Use pictures if possible.

Try to encourage your client to relate this new work to what they have been covering before.

Suggest your client read many explanations of the new concept or operation (other texts from the library are great for this).

Encourage your client to do all of the assigned questions and check their answers.

Suggest your client take a break when frustrated. Then come back to the work and take a new approach.

You could encourage your client to explain the concept and teach the methods used to someone else (try to use as many math terms as possible). A regular study partner is great for this.

When teaching, have your client especially note why they’re doing each step. Also try to extend the concept (ask “what if?” questions).

Before Tests:

Your client will benefit from doing questions of each type until the steps become automatic. A test is to see if they have mastered the concepts and methods. Therefore your client shouldn’t have to think a lot about how to do the work when they are working on the test.

When practicing your client can:

1) note anything they find hard to remember (“I always forget that step!” “I can never remember what to do with that kind of problem.”)

2) come up with a plan for remembering (“When I see that kind of question, I should first think…”).

3) test their plan with a few questions to see if it works for them on the test.

Also while practicing, your client can try to group the questions into types. Make separate sheets or index cards showing each question type or cue word on one side and the method used to solve it on the other. Have them test themselves.

Have your client note how to estimate or check their answers.

Suggest your client do all chapter review exercises. Do the chapter test as though it is a real test (don’t look at your notes; limit the time allowed).

Suggest your client ask someone (e.g., a study partner) to make up a test similar to the chapter test but using different questions. Your client can also check other texts for sample tests.

Encourage your client look at previous tests from their instructor to see the style of test used (e.g., Is math vocabulary tested? Are the questions similar to those in the book or are they presented differently?).

During Tests:

Encourage your client to use positive, encouraging self-statements: e.g., “Just take your time and concentrate.” “Good, you got that one done.”

Upon receiving their test, suggest your client write down the information that they think they might forget.
