It would help him\/her to apply metacognitive activities to each cognitive process by using \u201c<em>say, ask, and check<\/em>\u201d activities without memorizing.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-error\"><strong>The Eight-step Problem-Solving Strategy<\/strong><br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Read the problem aloud.\u00a0<\/strong>Have a teacher help you identify any unknown words.<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Paraphrase the problem aloud.\u00a0<\/strong> Reread the problem, identify the question that is asked, and        summarize the information that will be important for solving the problem.<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Visualize.<\/strong> Draw a picture of the problem or visualize the situation and tell what it is about.<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>State the problem.\u00a0<\/strong>Underline the most important information in the problem and then complete the sentences:\u00a0\u201c<em>What I know is\u2026,\u201d \u201cWhat I want to find out is\u2026<\/em>\u201d<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Hypothesize.<\/strong> Complete the sentence: \u201c<em>If\u2026, then\u2026<\/em>\u201d For example, \u201c<em>If 7 people each want to buy 20 tickets, then I need to multiply to determine the number of tickets.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0 For multi-step problems, think through the series of steps and write the operation signs in the order they will be used.<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Estimate.<\/strong> Write an estimate of the answer.<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Calculate.<\/strong> Calculate the answer and label it (i.e. 140 tickets).<br><br>\u25a0 <strong>Self-check.\u00a0<\/strong> Review the problem, check the computation, and ask if the answer makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For more information on math problem-solving and targeted interventions, see this handout<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/files\/2020\/09\/Math-Problem-Solving-Handout.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Math<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/files\/2020\/09\/Math-Problem-Solving-Handout.pdf\"> Problem Solving Handout<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry-summary\">\nYour client should be encouraged to self-question and self-monitor when attempting to problem solve.
