{"id":1481,"date":"2020-08-31T16:03:59","date_gmt":"2020-08-31T16:03:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=1481"},"modified":"2024-02-01T23:15:47","modified_gmt":"2024-02-01T23:15:47","slug":"information-for-parents-of-slow-learners","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/?page_id=1481","title":{"rendered":"Information for Parents of Children with Intellectual Disabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-info\">The following suggestions and information could be provided to parents of slow learners to help your client succeed in their home life<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Characteristics of Children and Youth with Intellectual Disabilities&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-success\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In general, children and youth with cognitive deficits may display some or all of these characteristics, depending on their age and degree of problems acquiring knowledge at school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They struggle with complex problems and work slowly.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have difficulty following multi-step problems.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They lose track of time and cannot transfer what they have learned from one task to another well. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have few internal strategies (i.e., organizational skills, difficulty transferring and generalizing information).<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They do not easily master skills that are academic in nature, such as the times tables or spelling rules.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They may have problems with management.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Work well with \u201chands-on\u201d material.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-success\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, slow learners differ from reluctant learners. &nbsp;A slow learner initially wants to learn, but has a problem with the process. &nbsp;A reluctant learner is not motivated and can be resistant to learning.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-success\"><b>Ideas to help children and youth with intellectual disabilities:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide a quiet place to work, where the child can be easily observed and motivated.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emphasize strengths. Use lots of praise and reinforcement frequently.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add variety to the academic routine. Do active things and use educational games, puzzles, and other techniques as much as possible<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep homework sessions short.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide meaningful, concrete activities rather than abstract ones.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Make learning fun and comfortable. Your positive attitude is very important.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use a \u201cThree Transfer\u201d form of learning, in which the student must take information and do three things with it beside reading. \u00a0For example, read it, explain it to someone else, draw a picture of it, and take notes on it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Add a variety of tasks to the learning, such as painting a picture of a reading assignment.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Encourage the student to explore an area of interest to him\/her.<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach how to use a calendar to keep track of assignments.&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be patient but consistent.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>For more information on and targeted interventions for intellectual disability in the home, see this handout: <a href=\"http:\/\/resourcelibrary.ucalgaryblogs.ca\/files\/2020\/09\/Intellectual-Disability-Home-Handout.pdf\">Intellectual Disability Home Handout<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-success has-medium-font-size\">Books for parents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Not What I Expected: Help and Hope for Parents of Atypical Children.
