Ensure that your client has all the necessary materials to complete it (e.g., books, paper, calculator).

Support the client in deciding what work to do 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. Use the following order when prioritizing:

1. This limits procrastination and the pressure of having to do it all in one night).

Break work into manageable chunks. Use highlighters to section off work, or cut pages into pieces if necessary. Set a goal of completing each section before moving on.

At the beginning of each week, encourage your client to plan for any upcoming tests or assignments and mark them in their agenda or on a wall calendar.

Block off time for studying or working on a certain assignment so that they know ahead of time that they will be doing it on those days.

Set daily goals to make homework time more predictable, which will make it easier to follow through.

Use a task timeline – to break assignments into smaller pieces and puts you in control of your time.

For older youth, direct them to read chapter summaries and review questions in assignments first to help determine the main ideas of the chapter and where they should focus on in their readings.

Instruct the client to take breaks.
